The Liam Connolly Perpetual Cup
The sporting career of former Tipperary hurler and footballer Liam Connolly of Coolmoyne and Fethard will be celebrated with the running of the Liam Connolly Perpetual Cup on Saturday August 29th at 2pm in the Fethard GAA Pitch.
Liam had an extensive Inter-County career with the Premier County in Hurling and Football. He won an All-Ireland Minor Hurling medal with Tipperary in 1953 and won a Munster Minor Hurling title in 1954, losing to Dublin in the All-Ireland final. Liam played for the Tipperary Minor Footballers in 1954 and the Tipperary Junior Hurlers in 1955 and was an ever present on the Tipperary Senior Football team from 1956 to 1967.
Liam was left corner-forward on the Tipperary side which won the 1958 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final and right corner-forward on the 1960 team which captured the Munster final before losing out to Wexford in the All-Ireland Final. Liam won two more All-Ireland Senior Hurling medals in 1961 and 1962. He won two County Senior Football Championships with Fethard while he won a South Senior Hurling medal with Na Piarsaigh in 1957, losing out to Thurles Sarsfields in the County Final.
Liam also won 2 Senior National Hurling League titles with Tipperary in 1960 defeating Cork and in 1961 defeating Waterford.
He was honoured with a Hall of Fame award by the South Tipperary Divisional Board in recognition of his many honours on the field of play.
Liam’s inter county roll of honour is as follows:
Liam started his inter county career by represented Tipperary at Minor Football level in 1953.
In 1953 Liam also represented Tipperary at Minor Hurling Level and was victorious in the both Munster and All Ireland Finals.
In 1954 Liam again represented Tipperary at Minor Hurling Level and was victorious in the Munster Final and lost the All-Ireland Final to Dublin. Again in 1954 Liam represented Tipperary at Minor Football level reaching the Munster Final.
In 1955 aged 19, Liam played for the County Junior hurling team and also started his 11 year inter county career at Senior Football level for Tipperary.
Liam was noted by all, including Mick O’Connell of Kerry Fame, as the one finest Munster footballers of his generation.
1959 was the year in which Liam made in his Senior Inter County Hurling Debut for Tipperary versus Limerick.
It was in 1960 when he won his first Muster SHC medal beating Cork in the Final. Tipperary progressed to the All-Ireland Final narrowly losing to Wexford.
In 1961 he won another SHC Munster title beating Cork again. Tipperary again progressed to the All-Ireland Final this time winning the title by defeating Dublin.
1962 proved to be another extremely successful year for Liam winning a SHC Munster medal defeating Waterford in the final and again winning the Liam McCarthy Cup in Croke Park defeating Wexford in the 1962 Final.
1963 Liam played in yet another SHC Muster Final losing out to Waterford that year.
At the age of 31 Liam represented Tipperary at County Intermediate Hurling level defeating Galway in the Munster Final and was victorious over Dublin in the All-Ireland Final of 1966.
